Smoke Over Sydney Basin
Posted: 22/11/2009A large amount of bush fire smoke is affecting the Greater Sydney Area.
RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the smoke is coming mainly from fires to the north-west of Sydney, including the Hawkesbury, Lithgow, Rylstone and Wollemi areas.
“We are already seeing difficult conditions, with temperatures in some parts of the state up around the 40 degrees mark,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said.
“With a hot and dry north-westerly wind blowing, this is sending smoke over the Greater Sydney area. “People with breathing illnesses should be taking precautions such as staying indoors.
“We ask that people do not call triple zero unless it’s an emergency or to report a new fire.
“The smoke is expected to remain in the Sydney area until tonight, when a southerly change is forecast,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said.
